Market deserves support

Frankly, I was shocked at the absolutely ridiculous allegation against Cornucopias and its president, Debra Bianco, although I shouldn’t be.

Once again, small town politics on a large town scale! I have known Ms. Bianco for several years. I met her when her dream of what Cornucopia could achieve was in the beginning stages and have seen her forgo a personal life to make sure that Cornucopia succeeded. I have seen her go up against influential self-serving bullies in Malibu, time and time again, at the risk of being slandered and practically bankrupt. I have seen first hand how Ms. Bianco has put her heart and soul into this project because she firmly believes Cornucopia can make a difference in Malibu in this generation and the next.

Cornucopia has again and again tried to make a difference to our children, our residents, and our land. From water conservation, which benefited many of Malibu’s residents, to their educational classes on everything from composting to worm farming. They have received awards such as the Dolphin award, as well as recognition from the City, County and State. I have watched as the Environmental Center up at the High School has gone from an eyesore to a beautiful garden full of potential and hope. Without the Farmers’ Market, Cornucopia has very little means of raising funds to continue the Environmental Center.

As far as Ms. Bianco canceling the Christmas Boutique last year, I know she agonized about whether to continue or to cancel. She was consumed with grief at the death of Cornucopia’s treasurer and longtime friend, Denny Melle’s husband, Gil. She knew that it would mean more money for Cornucopia, but felt since she had been unable to properly advertise the market that she would be doing a disservice to the vendors if Cornucopia took their money. It was a difficult decision at a difficult time, but she wanted to do what she thought was best for the vendors.

If ever there was a time for the little guys to stand up and speak up, now is the time. Perhaps if people spent more time in their gardens instead of making up ridiculous accusations, Malibu would be a more pleasant place to live.
