Two members of the Malibu community are starting off on the long road to rebuilding after fires destroyed their homes.

A Malibu High School college counselor is a victim of the Thomas fire in Ventura County.

Linh Nguyen lost her home last week in the days long blaze that forced more than 100,000 residents to evacuate. Nguyen is unhurt—she was able to escape safely with her husband and seven-month-old baby daughter Matilda. However, in the emergency, the family fled their home with little more than diapers and a few baby bottles. A Paypal account has been set up after many in the community asked how they can help. Immediate needs are said to be clothes, especially for Matilda, and a car seat. Nguyen says she lost everything in the fire.

Malibu fire captain and lifeguard Kyle Power and his family also lost their home in the fire, Mayor Skylar Peak announced at the Monday night city council meeting.

“Kyle was a friend of mine when I worked in the fire department for nine years and he’s one of the best captains we have in the whole entire department,” Peak said Monday, “so I was very sad to hear about that.”
