Two of the summer’s best fiction books-Thomas Pynchon’s “Inherent Vice” and Richard Russo’s “That Old Cape Magic”-are now out and have hit the bestseller lists.

In nonfiction, the literature of surfing has deepened and broadened with Jaimal Yogis’ “Saltwater Buddha,” and as the school year begins, top children’s reads include fun, series books as well as others featured in summer reading lists.
