Entertainment producer takes permit dispute to Court of Appeal

Music and film producer Lou Adler filed an appeal earlier this month of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Yaffe’s August ruling not to revoke the permit of a home being built next to Adler by property owner Bill Chadwick.

This will mark the third time the controversial permit will go before a court. Adler filed a suit against the city in 2003 when it refused to revoke the permit for the home, which is already under construction. A judge then ruled the permit should return to the City Council for review. The council voted 4-1 in 2004 not to revoke the permit. Adler then sued the city and Yaffe ruled against him.

Water main repair

A damaged 18″ water main at 24850 Pacific Coast Highway required immediate repair on Oct. 19. According to a press release, repairs necessitated shutdown of the main from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and caused closure of the #2 westbound lane of the highway from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. between John Tyler Drive and 25000 Pacific Coast Highway. Eighteen customers and nine fire hydrants in the area were without water during that time.

Malibu Stage Co. seeks sponsors

Malibu Stage Co. President Jacqueline Bridgeman said dwindling funds have made it necessary to ask the community to help sponsor new productions the company has planned for 2006. Being considered for the new season are the plays “Three Tall Women,” “Antigone,” “Romantic Comedy” and “American Buffalo.”

Staged readings of the plays for the new season will take place from December through February and some of Malibu’s finest actors and directors will be participating. The first reading will feature film and stage director Paul Almond, who will direct Nan Martin and Trish Van Devere in Albee’s “Three Tall Women.”

Bridgeman said the company’s past productions have been met with much enthusiasm and a faithful audience has been growing-returning donations in envelopes provided in the playbills. “People who live out of town are impressed enough with our work to send us donations,” Bridgeman said in a press release. “We need the same enthusiasm from the community-so many have never even been to our theatre.”

The season’s final show, “Reckless,” had to be canceled and refunds were mailed to ticket holders. Geoff Ortiz, Chairman of the Malibu Stage board, said in the press release that it would be a great loss to the community if the company ceased to exist, “Having a professional theater in Malibu brings culture to the community, and compared to other community projects, does not require a lot of money.”

Prospective sponsors should contact Bridgeman at 456.2526.

Pumpkin carving for firefighters

The office of Coldwell Banker Calabasas will hold a pumpkin carving contest and raffle on Oct. 26th with proceeds benefiting the local firefighters at Station 68. The donation is meant as a token of appreciation for their efforts in the community.

Recreation areas reopen after fires

Parklands in the Simi Valley hills that were affected by the recent fires are now open for restricted use, according to a press release from the National Park Service. The areas that were closed previously on Sept. 28 and are now open include the Cheseboro, Palo Coronado, Liberty and Upper Las Virgenes Canyons.

Restrictions are expected to last one year, during which time the public must stay on established roads and trails. Access will be allowed only during daylight hours and no motorized vehicles are allowed.

The restrictions are to ensure the area has a chance to recover, said Woody Smeck, superintendent of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area, Patrols in the area will be increased to enforce the new restrictions.
