Fluoride coming to Malibu

Waterworks District No. 29 will introduce fluoride on Monday to its water treatment plant that supplies a predominate portion of the Malibu district. According to the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, the district purchases water from the West Basin Municipal Water District, which in turn gets water from the Metropolitan Water District. The MWD decided to add fluoride to the water in February 2003 because of requests from public health officials and the appeal of preventing tooth decay. They will adjust the natural fluoride concentration from 0.1-0.4 parts per million to 0.7-0.8 parts per million at the Joseph P. Jensen Treatment Plant in Granada Hills.

There has been mild opposition to the fluoridation, with some speakers voicing their concern at City Council meetings. City officials have no authority over water fluridation.

The Fletcher’s gift will assist in building a state-of-the-art secondary school library, providing an electronic and resource center for print media. Construction is set for June 2008, where the library will be a part of a $13,500-square-foot academic building. Jeremy Fletcher is a senior managing director of the Boston-based real estate investment firm Beacon Capital Partners, Llc. While clinical psychologist Dr. Charlotte Fletcher sits on the board of the Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center.
