Indie folk rock band Seablood, featuring siblings Moses Isacson and Scottie Isacson, often performs during Malibu Living | Real Estate’s outdoor concerts and art shows.

A young, creative pair of siblings are finding their voices and building a fanbase in Malibu as the band Seablood. Fronted by brother and sister Scottie and Moses Isacson, Seablood has played a few dates at Malibu Living | Real Estate, and people have been taking notice.

Aubrey Coles of Malibu Living books acts at Point Dume Plaza and is a fan.

“I love Scottie and Moses. They’re amazing musicians and wonderful, beautiful people to work with,” Coles said. “Everyone at the plaza loves to hear their music.”

That music has been described as indie-folk rock. Scottie, 30, sings lead, writes and plays guitar, and brother Moses, 23, collaborates on lyrics, sings and is a multi instrumentalist. The two sing harmonies, blending beautifully together like only sibling vocalists can.

“Growing up, Scottie and I always did our own thing musically,” Moses described. “She’s been writing lyrically, incredible songs since she was 16. A lot of people have said she has a style like Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell. Her lyrics are poetic. I was classically trained on piano. A few years ago — one day, she was getting back from a surf trip in South Africa and she had just started working on a song. It was half finished and she asked me if I wanted to help her out with it and we just sat down on the kitchen floor, I grabbed my guitar and started jammin’ with her and I helped her finish the rest of the song. We were like, ‘Great ,this is so much fun. We work so well together. Why don’t we do this and make this a thing?’”

It is a “thing” now and Seablood is on the cusp of breaking out as they work on an EP. And if you’re wondering, “Why the name Seablood?” Simply put, Moses Isacson said, “Because the sea is in our blood.”

While the siblings are LA natives, during a year-and-a-half living on Point Dume and breaking into the music business, they’ve made a lot of friends who are successful, well-known artists. Many have offered their support, advice and even musical instruments to the up-and-coming band. Moses told The Malibu Times, “We’re very grateful for all the connections we’ve had the opportunity to make in Malibu.”

The two siblings, along with a younger sister, just returned from more than a month in Southeast Asia where they travelled for inspiration for new music. They were able to bring instruments and even gigged at what was described as a “hipster” nightclub/skatepark in Canggu, Bali. But both siblings were anxious to return home.

“Why did I leave Malibu?” Scottie recalled thinking.

Malibu’s Little Dume and Point Dume Plaza are the locations for a breezy video Seablood shot for its song “Scenic Route,” which is featured on their website, Seablood.com. It was shot well before the two and the rest of their family moved to the Point. It clearly shows the playful interaction of brother and sister who at times also use other musicians: drummers Mike Fabi and Nate Lichtenberger and cellist Eric Chapman.

“Our family had always wanted to move to Malibu. We’ve been working on it for years. It’s the dream. Who wouldn’t want to live in Malibu? Our family — we’re definitely ocean people,” Moses said.

Scottie praised her brother’s talent on multiple instruments.

“He’s very talented as a pianist. Sometimes he’ll play ukelele. It makes it kinda fun that he’s so talented in so many areas,” Scottie said. “Being able to play music with my brother is more fun and special.”

Scottie said she also wants Seablood’s music to spread a positive message.

“Something that makes us interesting is that we want to use our music as a platform to raise awareness about social justice causes that we’re passionate about like adoption and raising children out of poverty here and in third world countries.”

Her own family adopted an inner city child who is now 6 and whom Scottie says is “the joy of our lives.”

“We want to touch people with our music. We want to give people hope. We both know it is what we were born to do,” said Scottie. “It’s our passion.”

Seablood will be playing in November in Point Dume Plaza and has upcoming shows at the Vampire Lounge in Beverly Hills. You can follow them on Instagram @Seabloodband.
