GLAM SLAM
Hollywood’s biggest names put on their glitter and boogie shoes for the always-fab “Race to Erase MS” fundraiser. This year’s theme was Glam Rock and it gave everyone a great reason to pull out the eye glitter and get groovy. Some VIPs went all out in leather, lace, boots and plenty of bling. There were teased tresses and rhinestones, towering platforms and major medallions. Of course not everyone managed to capture the spirit of the occasion. “This is as Glam as I get,” said Tony Danza, who wore a steel gray suit. “I’m not really sure what it is-hence the dress.”
Lovely Linda Foster, decked out in a sexy cut-out dress, was positively primo. Hubby David, sporting big red tennis shoes, required reassurance. “Did I get it right?” he asked.
O.J. dream teamer Bob Shapiro looked totally bewildered. “Glam Rock? I have no idea.” Even Ed McMahon, who surely is old enough to remember Glam Rock, opted for the safety of a well-tailored suit.
This is not to say that all the guys were in the dark. One was spiffed out in a flashy purple velvet blazer. “I also wear this to Lakers Games,” he boasted. Montel Williams looked stylish in basic black slacks and tee, paired with tuxedo tails and wrap-around shades. And Dennis Rodman… well, that guy’s as Glam as it gets.
But my personal fav was a rocker who had it all. Electric velvet bellbottoms, silver platform boots, sparkly ripped tee, leather jacket, silver jewelry and three-day-old unwashed hair. “I didn’t buy a thing,” he boasted. “This is old school all the way.”
Inside the reception area, they made the rounds, bidding on must-haves like a pair of $2,500, 1010 thread count sheets, flashy ostrich-feather evening bags, guitars signed by Sting and button downs designed by the Governator. Another Arnold, Tom Arnold, was busy working the crowd. “What’s up buddy?” he howled while slapping backs. “You going to bid?”
The ballroom of the Century Plaza, meanwhile, was transformed into a rock stage, complete with an oversized neon guitar, gigantic red lips and kisses. The tables were draped in purple, black and pink satin with massive arrangements of orchids and roses. The evening kicked off with Tommy Hilfiger’s celebrity fashion show, which featured the likes of boa-ed Lisa Rinna, Harry Hamlin and gold-lamed, bicep-flashing Dennis R. Malibu emcee Ray Romano kept things moving along. By dessert time, Tom Arnold, Tony Danza and Bill Maher were auctioning off pricey items like a $100,000 Maserati Spyder.
The splashy shindig pulled in major moola for Nancy Davis and her Nancy Davis Foundation. Over the years, Nancy has raised millions of dollars to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis. “This has been a successful evening,” she declared. “But we won’t be truly victorious until we have a cure.” This year’s efforts raised a whopping $2.5 million.
The festive affair ended with performances by rocker David Lee Roth and songbird Cindy Lauper. So Glam bam thank you ma’am. If you just wanna have fun and support a great cause, “Race to Erase” is right on the money.
