Scoping meeting set for SMC satellite campus

A scoping meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 31 at Malibu City Hall’s multipurpose room for the environmental impact report (EIR) of Santa Monica College’s planned satellite campus in the Civic Center.

At the meeting, the public can learn about the project and provide written comments on their opinions.

The proposed Malibu project would include an educational facility with a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s substation and be located at 23555 Civic Center Dr. The campus would consist of five classrooms and labs, a multipurpose community room, a computer lab and administrative offices that could accommodate up to 210 students and 12 faculty and staff members. The project also proposes an “interpretive center” to support Legacy Park and other programs to provide information about Malibu’s environment and cultural history.

The EIR will examine the campus’ impact on air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, noise, traffic circulation and parking, among other areas.

Public comments on the Santa Monica College Malibu Campus project can also be mailed. The comments must be postmarked by June 17, 2012. Comments can be sent to Mr. Randal Lawson, executive vice president, Santa Monica Community College District, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA, 90405.

The project’s lead agency and applicant is the SMCCD. Other responsible agencies include the County of Los Angeles, the City of Malibu and the Regional Water Quality Control Board-Los Angeles Region.

FBI investigating MHS bomb threat

The FBI has joined forces with the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department Detectives in the investigation of the bomb threat called in to Malibu High School May 3.

On May 3, the school received a phone call at about 10:10 a.m. from someone believed to be a teenager, stating that a team of students was planting a bomb on campus. While authorities believed the threat to be a hoax when it was received, MHS, Juan Cabrillo and Malibu United Methodist Schools were all put on lock down as a safety precaution.

After receiving the threats, administrators contacted the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station and evacuated students from classrooms. The sheriff’s station conducted an extensive search of the campus with bomb-sniffing dogs, and all students were allowed to return to classrooms at about 1:30 p.m. after nothing was found.
