Pepperdine alumnus Andrew Putnam captured the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nevada, on Sunday, Aug. 5, making him the second Wave to ever win on the PGA tour.
The 29-year-old Tacoma, Wash., native finished with a total of 47 points and won by a margin of four points. He won $162,000, a two-year exemption from PGA Tour qualifiers and a spot in this past week’s PGA Championship.
“Coming into this week, I felt I had a good chance to possibly win,” Putnam said in a recent interview. “I’ve been playing really well… This is a dream week for me.”
Jason Lore became the first wave to win on the PGA Tour in 2005 at the 84 Lumber Classic.
Putnam is currently competing in his second year on the PGA Tour, as he earned another berth into the tour during 2015.
Putnam attended Pepperdine from 2008-11, where he was a three-time All-American and the 2009 West Coast Conference Player of the Year. During his time as a Wave, he had a scoring average of 72.57, placing him second all-time in Pepperdine history in that category when he graduated, yet he currently ranks fifth. He is tied for the school record in career top-20 finishes, with 36.
