In the good old days before Pepperdine, Malibu Canyon Road entered PCH at the intersection now called Webb Way. Then along came the Civic Center and the road was re-named Civic Center Way. An apt name, civic meaning “belonging to the people.” Now, apparently, that definition is in question. The proposal is to chop Civic Center Way into two pieces, giving a cul-de-sac to enter the condo complex and a second to enter Winter Canyon and the school/church complex.
I use this route daily as do many others and removing it as a through street will cause traffic congestion, a daily inconvenience and a longer trip for Malibu residents and emergency equipment such as the fire trucks and paramedics located at station 88 on Malibu road. To respond to an emergency at Webster school they would have to first travel down the coast highway, up Malibu Canyon and backtrack to the school, a nightmare in summer tourist traffic. Why would the city ever consider such a deliberate move to disrupt traffic when we already have an abundance of dead end roads all over town?
If it’s a school safety issue, not to worry. Malibu kids don’t walk to school, they are chauffeured to Webster School in the line of shiny SUVs I see every school day morning, turning onto Winter Canyon road on their way to the school house door.
