Author Kerry Max Cook, who served 20 years on death row in Texas for a crime he did not commit, will speak Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Malibu City Hall for the Malibu Library’s ongoing speaker series.

Self-educated and acting as his own attorney, Cook gained acquittal on charges for a rape and murder he did not commit, after DNA evidence proved his innocence. Cook will discuss the book he wrote about his experience, “Chasing Justice,” which was awarded Book of the Year by Reader’s Digest, as well as a critically acclaimed off-Broadway play and TV movie.

The event will take place in the Malibu City Council chambers, known as the Malibu Civic Theater for entertainment events. The address of city hall is 23825 Stuart Ranch Road.

Garth Stein, the author of “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” kicked off the speaker series on March 18. Future speakers include “Traveling Mercies” author Anne LaMott (May 16) and “Eat Pray Love” author Elizabeth Gilbert (June 23).

The series is free for the public. For more information or to make a reservation to see Cook speak, call the Malibu Public Library at (310) 456-6438.Â
