Every year the President of the United States urges all Americans to honor the commitment of our Veterans through appropriate Public Ceremonies.
Memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., 1918. (The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.) The day became known as “Armistice Day.”
Realizing that peace was equally preserved by veterans of WWII and Korea, Congress was requested to make this day an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veteran’s Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
With respect to all the veterans, this year on Saturday, November 11, at 11 a.m., the Malibu Chamber of Commerce and the City of Malibu are bringing local businesses, organizations and residents of Malibu together to commemorate Veteran’s Day with a public ceremony in honor of those who have served this country.
This “First Annual Public Ceremony” will take place in front of the City Hall parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The participants in this “two hour program” include Congressman Brad Sherman, representatives from the State Assembly’s office, County Supervisor’s office, Mayor Pro-tem Joan House, City Councilmember Jeff Jennings, Pepperdine University president Andy Benton, Captain John Payne, Veterans, Color Guards from Palms, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Optimists Club, Kiwanis Club and Malibu Association of Realtors members, local schools, local businesses and, of course, patriotic music and singing.
The planning committee welcomes and encourages all veterans residing in the area to attend this “Veteran’s Day Public Ceremony.”
We recommend that all parents and teachers use Veteran’s Day as an opportunity to teach their children and students about the contributions and sacrifices veterans have made so that we may enjoy our many freedoms.
On November 11, Malibu businesses will proudly display the American flag to salute all the area veterans!
