The following is a response to a letter from Ellen Sturtz
Our city has managed the Equestrian Park quite well with TR&R’s help, at very little expense to our community, since it was given to Malibu by Los Angeles County. The change with dog activities at the park caused many complaints from Malibu Equestrian families and citizens who were precluded from using this park.
I am not a board member of TR&R. On Jan. 12, the herders were illegally using this park. The city never gave permission. I am a volunteer, who was sent to the park to prep it for impending rains. Someone removed the lock and chain from the walk-in gate to the arena that day, so Drummond Ranch could trespass.
Rod Bergen (TR&R president) telephoned the Sheriff’s Department when he was surrounded by four threatening herders. One of them verbally threatened me. I was told I couldn’t take pictures of their activities. Why? Ms. Sturtz doesn’t tell you of the dogs that were chasing the sheep uncontrollably and biting them, while their owners were surrounding us. She doesn’t tell you that one of these dog trainers had to pin his dog down to put a leash on it. The deputy never allowed the herders to continue once she was aware of their illegal trespass.
Yes, the city is going to terminate the herders’ illegal use of the park. No, TR&R doesn’t use the show arena during these winter months, because of the severe washout that occurs. This is why TR&R doesn’t need a permit at this time of year.
Also, Ms. Sturtz made reference to our Little League. Is she going to ask them to share their facilities with the herding business? I think not. TR&R supports a canine park elsewhere in our city boundaries. Ms. Sturtz can then enjoy chasing sheep in an environment where our equestrians and Little Leaguers will not be a threat to her peace and privacy.
