Vince Bertoni, who has been serving as Malibu’s interim planning manager since last month, is leaving to work for the city of Beverly Hills. His job with Malibu will conclude after this week. Bertoni had previously worked for Malibu as a senior planner from 1992 to 1997.
The city has been without a permanent planning manager since Mike Teruya resigned for health reasons in April. Environmental and Community Development Director Vic Peterson said he will serve in the role of interim planning manager until a permanent replacement is found.
Malibu nonprofit in the news
KABC-TV will air a segment Sunday at 11 a.m. on Medicine for Humanity, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Malibu that is doing a project in Africa to help women get testing and treatment for cervical cancer. More information on the organization can be found at www.medicineforhumanity.org.
Family fun day in Calabasas
The Mountains Restoration Trust and the city of Calabasas are sponsoring an event called “Stream to Sea” for children of all ages to learn the importance of water quality and stream connection. Many local environmental groups will be there to help out with the scheduled activities, which include creating a mosaic trash sculpture.
The event will take place on June 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 3815 Old Topanga Road in Calabasas. Parking will be available at Calabasas High School. For more information, call 818.591.1701 ext. 205.
GOP women to hold fundraising luncheon
Bonita Chamberlain will be the guest speaker at the June 23 Malibu Republican Women, Federated fundraiser. Chamberlain is the founder of “Inside Afghanistan,” an organization specializing in economic development that is working with the Department of Defense training U.S. Special Operation Forces that are deployed to Afghanistan.
There will also be a display of Kuchi tribal jewelry. The luncheon will take place at 11 a.m. at Pepperdine University’s Villa Graziadio Executive Center. The cost is $22. To RSVP, call 457.3530.
Volunteers needed
The Malibu Art Festival is seeking volunteers to help out with booths. Those interested would help for two hours on July 30 and two hours on July 31. Those interested in participating should contact the Malibu Chamber of Commerce at 456.9025.
Vote on Forge Lodge delayed
The California Coastal Commission took public testimony on the Forge Lodge Bed and Breakfast on Friday, but did not vote on the item as the commission meeting was coming to a close. A vote will take place at a meeting in August at Costa Mesa.
