Paul Shoop

Malibu attorney and resident Paul Shoop passed away on Saturday, May 16 at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica. He was 67 years old.

Shoop was born on Aug. 10, 1947 in Dallas, Texas to Glenn and Louise Shoop. He attended Highland Park High School, graduated from Baylor University in 1969 and later from the University of Texas Law School, where he was associate editor of the Texas Law Review. He proudly served in the Texas National Guard.  After law school, he went to work at Thompson & Knight in Dallas.

In 1973, he moved his family to Santa Monica where he practiced law at Greenberg Glusker. Moving to Malibu in 1974, he opened a private practice with an emphasis on real estate and local business transactions. He was a familiar face in Malibu politics and outspoken on local issues. He was a dynamic advocate for his clients and causes. He retired from Shoop and Leanse in 2007.

For 40 years he supported missionaries and international water projects, and built houses in Baja California. He had a heart for inner city and homeless needs and sat on the board of the Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission.

“He was a loving father and will be missed by his wife of 32 years, Lee, and his six children,” a loved one shared. “Shoop loved when his children were all home for the holidays and was enchanted with the newest additions to his family — his three grandchildren. He had many friends and delighted in telling stories about his life experiences and childhood days. He was a man of passion, conviction and faith.”

Shoop is survived by his wife Lee; children Aaron, Tyler, Taylor and wife Joslyn, Evan and husband Ethan, Madison, and Logan; three grandchildren Cardiff, Vaughn and Grace; two sisters, Meri Love and Nancy Jeffery; and nephews Preston Love, Luke Love, Jordan Caver and Tristan Caver.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27 at Malibu Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the City of Hope or the L.A. Union Rescue Mission.
