Malibu surfer takes advantage of big surf

While Malibu temperatures will reach the mid-70s this weekend, the National Weather Service has issued a surf warning for Malibu and surrounding areas in Los Angeles. Strong rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions will remain in effect beginning Thursday at 5 p.m. through Sunday, according to NWS.

A peaking south swell and tidal range will create strong rip currents especially in south facing beaches like Zuma and Point Mugu. Waves will be in the 3-to-4 foot range but could reach up to 5 feet.

“[The waves] aren’t so big that people are afraid to go in,” Zuma Beach lifeguard Captain Remy Smith said. “But when the waves are 3-to-4 feet tall is when we have the most rescues.”

Both the low and high tides are predicted to be higher than normal and minor tide overflow and beach erosion are anticipated. The high tide is expected to occur Friday through Sunday in the evenings.

“A beach hazard statement is issued when threats to beach and surf zone safety are expected or occurring,” according to the NWS.

The NWS urges swimmers to use caution when in or near the water, to stay near occupied lifeguard towers and never swim alone. They also recommend swimming parallel to the shore if caught in a rip current.
