The lush grounds of the sprawling Ken Roberts estate in Pacific Palisades were turned into a vast playground for 2,000 moms, dads and tots as part of the annual Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation fundraiser.

Every year, the children’s carnival draws some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Where else would you have Tom Cruise, Patrick Stewart and Anjelica Huston reading classics, like Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” to an audience filled with fun-loving pip-squeeks?

An army of local celebs was enlisted to partake in the cause. Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Connelly were among the famous faces manning the booths.

While the children played, grown-ups got makeovers and fitness tips while grazing their way past a sumptuous spread prepared by top chefs from 26 Los Angeles area eateries.

Other attendees included mega skateboard-meister Tony Hawk, ice king Scott Hamilton and magic man David Copp-erfield. The afternoon was a big hit and a special treat for a dozen HIV-positive youngsters from Malibu’s Camp Heartland.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation was started 14 years ago by Susan DeLaurentis, Susie Zeegan and Ms. Glaser, who died of the disease in 1994. It now has 150 sites worldwide aimed at prevention and treatment of the disease.

All this clowning around paid off handsomely, raising an impressive $2 million for the cause.

    CASTING CALL

Ed Harris will be hitting the screen with a new leading lady. He’ll team up with lovely Nicole Kidman in two upcoming films: Robert Benton’s “The Human Stain” and Stephen Daldry’s “The Hours,” in which Kidman plays the legendary Virginia Woolf.

Veteran actor Harris has been on a role roll of late. He’ll appear in a quirky war comedy called “Buffalo Soldiers” and is preparing to make Gary Smith’s “Radio.” But Harris hasn’t just been hanging around the set. He recently picked up an honorary doctorate from the Art Institute in Chicago.

    ELEPHANT WALK

Nancy and Dick Riorden were among the animal lovers who went roaring into the Los Angeles Zoo for its annual Beastly Ball. More than a thousand safari-clad guests strolled the grounds, sampling fare from some of the city’s top restaurants. But lions and tigers and bears weren’t the only attractions at this bash. The star of the show was a 44-year-old Asian elephant named Gita, who not only paints using her tremendous trunk but also plays a mean xylophone.

The fundraiser is celebrating its 32nd year and raised a cool $1.7 million for the critter-cause. KID STUFF
