As a summer resident of Malibu, I often read your newspaper to keep myself up on local events when I am out here in Arizona. Upon reading The Malibu Times editorial page of May 28, I came upon an editorial (letter) by Mr. Jack Singleton. I was outraged to find that the Malibu City Council has devised a plan to not allow smoking on any public beach.
I would just like to say that I have this ritual that I perform on the first day of my arrival in Malibu for the summer. I like to go down to Leo Carrillo State Beach and enjoy a nice cigar, usually Cuban. I do this not to bother anyone or contaminate them with my smoke. I do this because I feel an almost spiritual connection to the beach and I get the chance to enjoy two of my favorite things in the world.
I understand that we as residents elect these people to speak for us and exercise guidelines set aside for the betterment of our community, but come on! Let’s give a little slack. What is next? Oh, I know, let’s put a measure on the ballot that would limit the amount of people that can go to Starbucks! Better yet, no one can be on Pacific Coast Highway before 6 a.m.
In closing, not everyone who enjoys cigarettes, cigars, or other tobacco products is out to pollute the community! Live and let Live!
