NYC dropped the big apple on Dec. 31, but Kristy’s Wood Oven & Wine Bar knows how to ring in the new year. On Monday night the picturesque eatery overlooking Zuma Beach celebrated the Chinese New Year with a traditional lion dance. The traditional dance mimicked the movements of a lion, with performers in the elaborate costumes dancing to boisterous music while entertaining guests.
The most important social and economic holiday in China, the new year is a time to bring together family to feast. China adopted the Western calendar in 1912, beginning the new year to Jan. 1, but the traditional Chinese New Year is still observed as a spring holiday. Younger generations now tend to view the holiday as a time to relax from work, more than the past emphasis as a chance to renew family ties. For more read history.com.
The lion dance is just the latest adventure by the husband-and-wife team of Greg and Kristy Bashant, who opened Kristy’s in early 2011 right off PCH at 6506 Westward Beach Road. The eclectic eatery sports a diverse menu, but its numerous pizza selections are a foundational feature.Â
Selections consists of margherita, mushroom, Greek, smoked ham, spicy chicken sausage and prosciutto.
The crunchy, thin-crust pizzas are cooked in a traditional wood oven from Italy. And Kristy’s strives to keep the supplies natural, using an array of woods, including almond and pecan.Â
