WILD THINGS

When it comes to helping our feathered, finned or fuzzy friends in need, the California Wildlife Center is always there to lend a helping hand. Every fall the center pulls out all the stops with a roaring good time at the breathtaking Gull’s Way estate for the annual Wild Brunch fundraiser. This year’s sensational shindig takes place on Sun., Sept. 25.

Last year’s event was the most successful ever and raised thousands of dollars to help the center continue its mission to help give wildlife a second chance. Every year the ocean-view event is a feast of sights and sounds and you’re sure to come away with better animal instincts.

Animal lovers are free to roam around the spectacular grounds feasting on some of the best eats in town. There’s also an amazing array of goods at the silent auction where you can pick up everything from a personally designed puppy portrait to fab batik frocks from the Far East. Live auctions usually include great jet-set getaways and even beachy works of art like Kathleen Keifer’s fantastic fronds.

Hair care guru John Paul DeJoria and legendary game show host and animal champion Bob Barker are among the previous honorees. This year they will be toasting Malibu’s top animal doc Dr. Lisa Newell.

The brunch is the center’s biggest fundraising event, and even though it’s just once a year the feel-good projects like the raptor renesting and the pelicans in peril programs never stop.

The dollars raised keep the hard working vets and volunteers at the center on their toes rehabilitating and saving everything from baby opossums to red tailed hawks and dolphins.

So help a good Malibu cause and don’t miss out on the fun!

SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT

There will be grins all around as Operation Smile holds not one but two fundraisers this month. The first is hosted by Veronica’s Skin and Body Care Center on Wed., Sept. 21 right here at Veronica’s in Malibu. Veronica’s has been a longtime supporter of Operation Smile along with locals like Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. Come down to Veronica’s and check out a special presentation of “A Cure to War: Six Degrees of Humanity.” The film is by Patrick Heaphy and it’s a world premiere.

The next event is Fri., Sept. 23 and it’s a biggie for Op Smile. The hardworking organization will be celebrating a milestone with its 10th annual Smile Gala. The festivities take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Roma and Mark are the honorary chairs and Veronica is on the host committee.
