Letter: Smoke and Mirrors

I am disappointed “The Slate” voted against expanding Bluffs Park which, in my opinion, is the perfect place to accommodate the needs of our community while preserving 90 percent of a neglected coastal bluff. It would have allowed Malibu to set the example of eco-friendly parks and land restoration. Well, they voted against that — not Rosenthal and La Monte. They are the champions for the the kids and amenities in one central location — Bluffs Park.

The Slate suggests they want to build a skatepark at La Paz. Honestly folks, I doubt it’ll happen anytime soon. Sadly, there are people in this community who have “Legal Teeth,” who have a way of delaying or stopping any growth, even for parks and amenities. I know it well from personal experience — it took me 10 years to build Trancas Park. Aside from the lawsuits that will occur from the neighbors in Serra Retreat and the Malibu Knolls, one has to wonder… “Think they’re gonna want a skatepark in their front yard with all the noise and crowd that skateparks attract?” The neighbors up at Trancas sure didn’t want a skate park on their end of town.

I think this underhanded maneuver was a smoke and mirrors shenanigan on behalf of Rick Mullen. It’s the same old “push it along, delay it and it’ll hopefully never happen” tactic. He has been dismissive, condescending and very vocal that anyone who wants anything other than “rural” Malibu should go live in the valley. He certainly didn’t get the number of votes he did for being Mr. Congeniality. “Fireman” listed as his occupation surely caught the eye of people who don’t know really know that smarmy side of him.

I feel sorry for families who were deceived.

Anyone who thinks this skatepark will happen any time soon, in the next year or two? I’m afraid you may be disappointed to hear the La Paz project hasn’t even been designed yet, let alone adding a “World Renowned Skate Park.”

I think a bunch of “Slate” voters got seriously bamboozled! It seems they didn’t realize “slow growth” really means “no growth” and that our local “Fireman” is not really into building anything in Malibu other than his ego.
