HAPPY FEET

Dance lover Liane Weintraub got things off on the right foot as she hosted a swellegant shindig for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Following an electrifying performance, Liane and the Center Dance Association transformed the Grand Hall of the DCP into a swanky supper club. Angela Bassett got her groove back as well as local A-listers like Anjelica Huston, Jane Seymour and supermodel Tatjana Patitz. The footloose fete raised thousands of dollars to support the CDA and gave everyone a good excuse to just cut loose.

VERY, VERY GEHRY

A few years back, the hottest item at the Music Center’s live auction wasn’t a trip to Paris or a golf lesson with Tiger Woods. It was a small piece of scrap metal left over from the construction of Walt Disney Concert Hall.

When a lowly piece of material designed by Frank Gehry could cause such a stir, just imagine the commotion caused by the architect’s new jewelry line.

If the action at Tiffany & Co. the other night is any indication, wearable Gehry will be all the rage. Rodeo Drive was jumping as 300 Gehry groupies checked out the artist’s latest creations. The setting was sensational (would you expect anything less?) with sensuous organic furniture, dramatic blue lighting and puffy paper clouds drifting overhead.

Mixing gems with exotic stones, light colored wood and precious metal, the unique line of bijoux and accessories is inspired by floral, marine and other naturalist themes with names like Fish, Orchid and Equus.

The celeb quotient was high with Ellen DeGeneres, Laurence Fishburne, Anjelica Houston, Owen Wilson, Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy among the famous faces. They sipped champagne and snacked on spicy tuna tartare in sesame miso cones before eyeing FG’s latest must haves.

Inside, the cash registers were ringing as fans snapped up $300 cufflinks, $600 pendants and $1,000 bangles. Some pieces were as simple as a single cut stone, others were elaborate like the $750,000 diamond and pearl-encrusted gold mesh choker.

All that shopping had us working up an appetite. Soon we sat down to a dinner of chino chopped salad, cote de boeuf and Chinois baby lamb chops, all courtesy of Wolfgang Puck.

The evening wrapped up with a set of songs from John Legend and diva Patti LaBelle. It was a crowd-pleasing performance to be sure, but there’s no doubt who took center stage at this show. From buildings to bling, modernism is all the rage. And when it comes to cutting edge design, the Gehry-ier the merrier.
