The new book season is here with big books like Franzen’s “Freedom” flying up onto bestseller lists everywhere. The beautifully produced collection “Ether” by Evgenia Citkowitz is on the fiction list, following a wonderful event at Diesel. Two wonderful contributions to the mystery and science fiction sections: the latest Martin Cruz Smith, “Three Stations,” and William Gibson’s “Zero History,” respectively. Susan Casey’s informative and entertaining new book, “The Wave,” featuring big wave surfer Laird Hamilton, has shot straight to No. 1 on the nonfiction list (the author and editor of “O” magazine will be in store Oct. 6, along with Hamilton to read from and sign copies of her book). Also, two new nonfiction titles just out are Stephen Hawking’s “The Grand Design” and Bob Woodward’s “Obama’s Wars.” Many of this month’s children’s bestsellers are books to read for school: classics such as “The Island of the Blue Dolphins,” “Number the Stars” and “The Witches.” Lastly, new this month, Cornelia Funke’s new series begin with “Reckless.”
