Hugh “Dan” Wallace, 83, died April 18.

Wallace, a California native, and his wife Evelyn called Malibu their home for 30 of their 58 years together.

Born in 1925 and raised on a working dairy farm, Wallace graduated from California State College at Fresno with a degree in physics. For 35 years, he worked as an engineer for Hughes Aircraft Corporation, later known as Raytheon Corporation. He also served in the United States Air Force as a 1st lieutenant stationed in Germany.

Wallace traveled extensively to every continent, except Antarctica, and studied languages, music, history and literature. He gave countless hours of service to the Democratic Party and was an honored recipient of a Truman Award. In 1992, he worked tirelessly to help found the Malibu Labor Exchange. In 1997, he purchased the bus that served as Malibu’s Cold Wet Emergency Shelter for local homeless for 12 winter seasons.

Wallace was appointed Health and Safety Commissioner for the City of Malibu. In 2004, after many years of community service, he was presented a “Malibu Tile” by the city council. Wallace was an officer/board member of the Friends of the Library and the Malibu Villas Homeowners Association. He attended Saint Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Malibu.

Wallace is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughter Kathryn Wallace; foster daughter Laura Sellmer; daughter-in-law Linda Miller; brother RJ “Bob” Wallace; and sister-in-law Beverly Wallace and granddaughter Caroline Sellmer. He is preceded in death by his son Kenneth Wallace.
