With two seats up for grabs, the composition of the Malibu City Council is at stake, but the outcome of the April 9 election is far from certain.

When it comes to money, Planning Commissioner Andy Stern leads the pack. According to City Clerk Lisa Pope, Stern has reported year-to-date campaign contributions of $17,139. Realtor Beverly Taki came in second with year-to-date contributions totaling $12,007 and incumbent Sharon Barovsky is third with reported funds of $10,234.

The two remaining candidates had significantly less in their coffers. Retired executive John Wall reported just a fraction of what the other candidates had to spend, with $5,422 for year-to-date campaign funds. Current figures for environmental educator Robert Roy van de Hoek were unavailable, but his year-to-date contribution totals were below $2,000 for the previous period.

A total of 1,227 absentee ballots have been sent out to residents who will not be able to cast their votes in person.

The city will have seven voting precincts located at Duke’s Malibu restaurant, the Malibu Public Library, Bluffs Park, St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, Malibu High School, Malibu West Swim Club and Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School.
