Malibu may slow down the divorce petition … to give Santa Monica time to come up with a plan.

The city may ban parking of commercial vehicles at night … here’s looking at you, kayak rental guy.

California’s fire response system .. for big fires … is broken.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  final  ))) edition of the (((  Wednesday ))) news … from Radio Malibu  …. the new 99 point 1 K B U U.

Good morning Malibu P C H!

Malibu May Slow Down Divorce Proceedings

Malibu negotiators are suggesting slowing down the divorce petition they’ve filed … to split Malibu out of the Santa Monica controlled school district.

City council members Rick Mullen and Laura Rosenthal are recommending that the city ask L-A county bureaucrats to hold off on the process …. while the Santa Monica school board comes up with a divorce plan of its own.

Santa Monica officials last week asked for the delay.

Malibu is apparently goign to ask Santa Monica for a temporary plan … a “vote by district” plan that would allow Malibu residents to control one of the seven board seats … until the districts can be split.

Here’s the problem:

Malibu resident Craig Foster is up for reelection next year …. and its very easy to imagine that Santa Monica voters will toss him out.

Foster is a proponent of a district split … Santa Monica taxpayers are enjoying property tax revenues flowing from Malibu to support Santa Monica school programs.

But Santa Monica Malibu school elections are governed by the City Charter of the City of Santa Monica.

That may not be easy to change .. to protect Malibu voting rights.

Meanwhile … the Santa Monica school board is coming up with a plan to continue those payments … maybe for 50 years … and to provide for an orderly divorce between the two cities …. which are tied together in a school district that is viewed as an unresponsive distant power by many Malibu residents.

The matter will go up for discussion at next Monday’s city council meeting.

RVs And Other Big Vehicles Targetted

We told you yesterday that the city may add as many 446 parking meters to Malibu.——

The city council may also vote on Mondayt to go after oversize vehicles … parked overnight …. on city streets and P C H.

Campers … RVs … trailers … and kayak rental stands would presumably be included.

A city zoning subcommittee is recommending that the city ban the parking of commercial vehicles, with the exception of local deliveries, on City streets.

R-Vs and other big non-commercial vehicles could park during daylight hours to allow for access to visitor serving resources.

Maybe an option for residents to acquire 72 hour permits to temporarily park oversize non-commercial vehicles on City streets … also discussed .

How this will play out at the Coastal Commission , which wants maximum beach access … yet to be determined.

Weed Costs Escalate

It’s going to cost city taxpayers a bit more to pull weeds at city parks.

The City of Malibu is in the last year of a three-year contract for landscape maintenance services at the City’s parks … buildings and the PCH median.

The city manager says the costs have gone up significantly …. because of the city’s use of an Integrated Pest Management Program to go after rats and squirrels.

It’s going to cost an additional 169 thousand dollars to pay the contractor for the increased work.

The matter goes before a city council subcommittee on Monday.

KBUU Seeks City Endorsement To FCC

Also on the agenda … a request from radio station K B U U for the city to send a letter to the Federal Communications Commission.

The city is asked to endorse the radio station’s requests to increase power and switch frequencies to better cover all of Malibu with its radio signal.

The FCC unexpectedly granted the request last week … but another station in Los Angeles has asked the FCC to reverse itself.

KBUU’s lawyer in Washington does not expect the challenge to succeed … but the city’s letter will be helpful in fighting the challenge

Legislators Say Statewide Brushfire Plan In Tatters

State legislators are worried that California was caught flat-footed and responded poorly to fight last month’s catastrophic Wine Country fires.

They plan to hold hearings beginning next month to evaluate the response … including apparent shortcomings in a mutual-aid system designed to quickly rally first responders.

Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson … who chairs the Legislative Committee on Emergency Management … says the mutual-aid system for handling fire requests may be “inadequate. “

She is worried that the state’s fire season is growing longer and more destructive.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that commanders in Sonoma and Napa counties requested 305 fire engines from other jurisdictions through the mutual-aid program.

But only 130 engines arrived to help.

Dwindling resources … and a reluctance of local governments to share them .. to blame.

Top legislative priorities include securing additional funds for the mutual-aid system and Cal Fire.

Also … creating a statewide emergency notification system.

California emergency managers currently employ a patchwork of warning systems.

Some agencies — including those in Napa County — are not set up to send Wireless Emergency Alerts to cell phones during a disaster.

This is the story was based on reporting by the San Francisco Chronicle.

49 Homes Lost In Fire Caused By Idiots

Back in Malibu …

It’s going to be hot this Thanksgiving.

It was hot on Thanksgiving 10 years ago … with Santa Anas blasting … when five idiot young people bought some wood at a Malibu supermarket and drove up to the caves above Corral Canyon Road.

They built a bonfire ….and just for fun kicked burning logs over a cliff to see the embers fly.

The result was the most destructive fire in Malibu in the 15 years before .… and 10 years after.

4700 acres … and 49 homes in Malibu were burned.

Two men were sentenced to a year in Los Angeles County Jail for starting the Corral Canyon fire.

Brian Alan Anderson, then 25, and William Thomas Coppock, then 26.

The Thanksgiving weekend Corral Canyon fire … 10 years ago … and we haven’t had a major fire here since.

Varsity Soccer: Brentwood 1, Malibu 0

JV Soccer: Brentwood 2, Malibu 1

From the KBUU sports wire ….

The Malibu high school boys soccer teams took it on the chin in their first game of the season on Monday.

Brentwood beat the varsity boys 1 to nothing ….

Senior Goalkeeper Sage Metzler had 4 spectacular saves to keep the game close.

Junior forward Kiah Kury had the Shark’s best chance …. when he took a bouncing through-ball on the turn between two Brentwood defenders and taking a half-volley shot towards goal.

The Brentwood keeper made the save.

Great performances from freshmen midfielders Julian Tso and Maika Apana-Bates, getting their first career Varsity starts and playing the majority of the game … 60 minutes out of 80.

The J-V boys also went down …. 2 to 1.

Junior newcomer Harry Lang got the lone goal for the Sharks.

He made an impressive run in to the box and was fouled for a penalty kick.

He buried it in the back of the net to make the lone sharks score.

This story .. reported by Ignacio Rodriguez.
