Two of the three members of the Malibu High golf team competed in the California Interscholastic Southern Section Individual golf tournament May 11 at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.

Now, the team is focused on recruiting members for next year’s team, said first-year Sharks golf coach Cindy McConnell.

“We are hoping to get more players, so we can have a competitive team,” she said.

This season’s Shark golfers — sophomore Daniel Haines and freshmen Quincy Allen and Josh McConnell — could only compete as individuals in golf matches against other schools. Team competition requires squads to have at least six players.

That didn’t stop Malibu from having a successful season on the course though. Allen and Haines competed in the first round of the CIF playoffs before bowing out in a tough field that included over 100 golfers. The two were also the top golfers in the Frontier League. Allen was named the Frontier League’s player of the year due to his low stroke average and Haines had the second lowest stroke average in the league.

McConnell said the regular season ended on a high note for the team. Both Allen and Haines shot under 80 during an April 30 match in Santa Paula.

“The boys played really well,” she said. “Quincy shot a 73 and Daniel shot a 77.”

McConnell said Allen’s scores declined throughout the season. She said Haines scoring average dropped from the 90s last season to the 80s this season.

McConnell said Josh McConnell, her son, is improving.

“This was his first time playing golf,” she said. “He is a beginner. It takes time.”

The coach said the golf trio is excited for next season.

“They will be practicing this summer, playing in junior golf events, and getting better and better,” she said.

McConnell added if anyone wants to participate on the golf team next season they can contact her or Malibu High athletic director Chris Neier.
