At its meeting in Oceanside next week on Wednesday, the California Coastal Commission will vote on whether to finalize the approval for two controversial Malibu projects. One is the makeover of the Malibu Lagoon, which has pitted several environmentalist groups against each other over a dispute on the necessity and the environmental sensitivity of the project. The other is the proposal to enhance various parks operated by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and its sister organization the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority with various features, including overnight camping. City officials and numerous Malibu residents are opposed to the project.
Coastal staff has recommended the 12-member commission approve both items with some modifications from the proposals. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. and take place at the Oceanside City Council Chambers, located at 300 North Coast Highway. The session will be streamed live on the Internet at www.coastal.ca.gov. It will be archived on the site shortly after the meeting.
