After defeating Costa Mesa High School 58-57 in Malibu High School girls basketball’s first ever CIF post-season tournament, the Sharks traveled to Santa Maria and were defeated by St. Joseph’s High School, 94-14.
The St. Joseph’s Knights team is top ranked in the division, and is favored to win the district playoffs. Trailing 40-8 at halftime, the Sharks made only three baskets, all of them were three-pointers. Two of those were made by guard Marie Vazelakis, who scored a total of eight points.
The Sharks finished the season with a 12-12 record in overall games, 5-5 in Frontier League play, and 1-1 in the CIF playoffs.
All-League Malibu guard Danielle Bush led the team in most offensive categories, including two- and three-point field goals, foul shots, and a 15 point-per-game average. The Sharks team next season will retain all but two starting players, who are graduating seniors.
“It was certainly a good year for these girls,” Malibu’s head coach Andy Meyer said in a press release. “Our pre-season goal was to qualify for the CIF playoffs. Not only did we do that, we also won a hard fought game against a higher seeded team. This was a very enjoyable season for me … they are a wonderful group of girls. Next year most of the team returns, and that could lead to an even better season.”
