Have you heard this one?
Five Malibu City Council members walk into a bar…
The City Council has now “reluctantly” extended the View Committee’s deadline for coming up with an ordinance dealing with “view protection.” The City Council has chosen to blame the View Committee for problems the Council itself has created, including: loading the committee with 13 members, that number by itself resulting in time taken up in the allowing of each member to speak, often in tiresome, endless discussions about trivia, also in continuing efforts to re-invent the wheel, e.g., “primary view;” appointment of members, some of whom systematically stall or delay the decision-making process, including talking even after a motion has been adopted; at least one member is opposed to any change in the status quo, arguing that view matters should be decided in court, as at present.
Thus the council is blaming the View Committee for the council’s self-inflicted wound. They are upset because the View Committee has caused the council members to shoot themselves in the foot. Almost two-thirds of those voting this past April wanted Malibu to have an effective ordinance restoring their views.
It should be obvious that our “reluctant” City Council isn’t interested in complying with the will of the voters.
I urge a maximum turnout when the View Ordinance is taken up for a vote by the Planning Commission and the City Council. Make your “views” known.
