In news from down the coast … Santa Monica continues to grapple with conflicts between pedestrians and electric scooters.

Santa Monica allows four companies to  to operate within city limits with a combined 2,000 scooters and 1,000 bikes.

But Santa Monica has cited or impounded more than 100 unauthorized devices from other companies since last fall.

105 parking zones have been painted on city sidewalks … accordign to the Santa Monica Daily Press newspaper.

The City is doubling down on safety strategies ahead of the busy summer tourist season.

It has already started installing 100 permanent signs indicating dismount zones downtown and in other areas.

Plus …  and 35 signs along the beach bike path and in Palisades Park identifying those areas as off-limits to electric scooters and bikes.

Electric scooters that are being ridden on the bike path are being automatically throttled down to one mile per hour … by satellite positioning devices …

The City decided to choke the devices because … if they were completely disabled … riders would abandon them en masse and create pileups.

This sory is written based on reporting in the Santa Monica Daily Press … www.smdp.com .
