The Malibu Library was transformed into a Polynesian paradise last week when Friends of the Malibu Library hosted a children’s summer event. Families gathered in the Malibu Community Room to watch performances by the Polynesian Paradise Dancers, who presented many traditional and modern island dances from places like Tahiti, Hawaii, and New Zealand.

Polynesian Paradise Dancers founder and choreographer Akemi Welsh said they have performed in 34 states over the last six years. “It is our mission to educate about our Polynesian culture and do it in an entertaining way,” Welsh shared. “We are happy when audiences of all ages appreciate our presentation and also learn about the island culture.”

Young participants jumped up and learned a few of the dances when volunteers from the audience were requested.

Newly appointed Children’s Librarian Lauren Kratz was happy with the turn out. “I loved watching the joy on the children’s faces while watching the Polynesian dancers perform … I hope to continue to bring enthusiasm and fun to every program and event that happens at the Malibu Library.”

After the performance, light tropical refreshments were served on the patio.

This performance was the last children’s performance of the library’s “Read to the Rhythm” program.Treasurer of the Friends of the Malibu Library Yvonne Tang explained that the group has sponsored six performances, in addition to instructional and educational events.
