My family and I have lived a two-minute walk from Fire Camp 8 at the top of Las Flores Canyon since the 1980s. I want to thank Laura Rosenthal and Lou La Monte, who are running for City Council, for attending the neighborhood meeting regarding the fire camp. They know we can’t vote in the City of Malibu elections since we were not included in the incorporation. However, our paths cross constantly in Malibu and they wanted to lend support in our gathering of information.
And that is what my neighbors and I wanted, information. We have had inmates at Camp 8 over the years, but never a fence. So why do we need one now? Upon calling Zev Yaroslavsky’s office, we find out he doesn’t know about the moving of inmates to Camp 8 and the measurement for a fence to take place on Feb.19.
So we had a neighborhood meeting to try and find out answers. Zev Yaroslavsky’s office responded as soon as they gathered information and it was determined that Fire Camp 8 was not a suitable site for the inmates. On my street alone, we have homeowners who are LAFD firefighters, Cert Team members trained by Brad Davis, an ex Sheriff’s deputy who is now a practicing doctor and a couple who professionally respond to national disasters. We are not a group prone to overreacting. I was disappointed that other Malibuites were so quick to criticize our neighborhood. Of course, we expect that from the greater Los Angeles area, but not from our own community.
