Fires salvo at extremism

It is reprehensible that J. Wilson would write a letter claiming to care about Malibu while, in the same sentence, praying for his neighbors’ homes to burn down. I am astounded at the level of sheer sociopathology exhibited by some environmental extremists in this town who consider it a “criminal act” for people to plant what they choose, particularly when planting what they choose can save their families and the lives of their neighbors.

Mr. Wilson harshly criticizes our heroic firefighters for encouraging residents to remove dead plants to make the job of extinguishing fires and saving lives easier. We need to stand guard against the violent Earth First philosophy by advocates and stop it from weaving its way into our land use regulations. He is one of those in the environmental community who believe the only safe use of the land is no use. They will tell us the kind of house to build and plants to plant and if we follow their “natural order” and suffer, that is good because it is natural. Well, we aren’t buying it.

Wildfires have often been a test of character of the people of Malibu. We have always passed that test with flying colors by rising to the occasion and making extraordinary sacrifices to help our neighbors. When the next fire strikes, we will be there to offer Mr. Wilson whatever help he needs, and perhaps he will even be grateful.
