Local youth have the opportunity to play a variety of sports offered through the city’s summer camps, including tennis.

The City of Malibu’s Parks and Recreation Department continues to offer summer camp programs based on the various interests of the Malibu community.

July and August boast a wide variety of programs including sports camps for baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

Kids not interested in sports can enjoy laser tag camp, Lego animation camp for iPod touch, Lego engineering camp and video game design camp. Finally, based on Malibu’s infamous surf culture, the city offers an outstanding surfing camp at Surfrider Beach.

Any child age five to 14 can sign up for the city’s camps.

“Who wouldn’t want to play laser tag on a green field overlooking the Pacific Ocean while hiding behind large inflatable objects?” Recreation Manager Amy Crittenden said. “The Parks and Recreation Department started offering more specialized camps starting in 2003 and each year we strive to offer quality programs that are fun, exciting and more memorable to our participants.”

In addition, this year the City has added a series of camps titled “Itty Bitty Camps,” specifically designed for ages 3-5. It’s the first time the city has embarked on summer camp programming for this younger age group.

Besides Itty Bitty basketball, soccer and T-ball camps, various science camps will be offered, including My First Science Lab Camp and In My Garden Environmental Science Camp.

he City of Malibu works with Malibu High School, and many of the school’s athletic coaches oversee the programs. Leaders say it has become a positive way to build a foundation for the future sports at MHS as well as learn from the very best coaches in respect to fundamentals, philosophies, strategy and technical skill.

Partnering Malibu coaches include Andy Meyer (basketball), Rich Lawson (surfing), Ray Humphrey (flag football and track), Ari Jacobs (baseball), Mark Cooley (softball), Airess Padda (volleyball), Bruce Young (tennis) and Melisa Andino (cheerleading).

Here are the remaining camps by week:

July 21-25: Baseball, Basketball, Itty Bitty Basketball, Laser Tag, Lego Engineering, Surfing

July 28 – August 1: Tennis, Video Game Design, Volleyball

August 4-8: Adventures in Science, In My Garden Science, Surfing, Tennis
