SIMPLY DIVINE
Hollywood stars and local notables have been doing their part for the economy, bagging bargains and contributing toward a good cause at the same time. The signs at this year’s “Divine Design” event said it all-SHOP=FOOD. Project Angel Food’s annual buying spree adds up to thousands of free hot meals to those in need.
The evening of shopping, champagne and celebrities kicked off with a gala dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to toast this year’s award recipients. High profile hoofers Lisa Rinna and Cheryl Burke looked their “Dancing with the Stars” best in skintight LBDs. Cheryl rocked the red carpet in a sexy strapless mini while Lisa donned a halter with some rather regal rubies. Malibu’s David Arquette took a more casual approach, sporting a white tee and tennies.
The festivities included a fashion show by Tadashi Shoji, who was also honored as Divine Designer of the Year. Madagascar star Jada Pinkett Smith picked up the Woman of Style prize while David Furnish was feted as the Man of Style. Elton John’s significant other has been a busy man these days, serving on the board of his partner’s AIDS foundation and acting as executive producer of “Billy Elliott-The Musical.”
After the awards presentation, it was on to shopping. Revelers made their way to the old Robinson’s May department store across the street, where the racks were packed and shelves were piled high with glamorous goodies. After complaining about the winter chill I was told, “Don’t worry dahrling, there are loads of furs inside.” From chinchilla to cashmere, there were plenty of cover-ups to ward off the cold.
On the fashion front, there was something for every personality and pocketbook. If you are mad for plaid, Libertine had the look with a brightly colored blazer and matching hot pants. The jet-set get-up is sure to turn heads and you could pick it up at half of its original $3,450 price. Fashionistas who are crazy for Carrie Bradshaw found a perfect place to get that “Sex in the City” look for less. Patricia Fields’ white cocktail frock with beach ball-sized bloom was an exact replica of the one featured in the film. Deejays got into an ’80s groove spinning Tears for Fears while servers passed out quiche and crab cakes, and divine divas lugged around their loot. Cash registers were ringing all night long bringing in big bucks for a great cause.
Since getting its start in 1989, Project Angel Food has prepared and delivered more than five million meals for those in need. Now that’s an act of kindness that’s always in fashion!
