College football scandal

Absolutely the worst season of fog and overcast in 20 years, huh?

I think locals are being duped. Fooled! Those squad cars on the side of the road? One day, when we locals least expect it, I fear they will be filled with radar guns and a live squad.

Let me be the first and loudest to express approval and appreciation that the mounds are seemingly staying in Legacy Park. The little hills, particularly along PCH, will add character and size to the park for generations to come. Can’t wait till it is open!

By the way, the new Trancas Park looks great. The doggie Bark Park is the best.

With the demolition of the PierView building, only 50 years of memories remain. The PierView had its heyday in the ‘90s as a weekend and nighttime hangout, and the best bar on the beach. But before that, the building had a distinction in the ‘80s: Home of one L.A.’s best jazz lounges, Pasquale’s in the upstairs part. Yet earlier, I remember in the ‘70s the Euphoria Records store, Cardi’s Pizza and Edward Jones hair salon.

Has the World Cup ever come to Malibu? Absolutely not! But the Olympics were here in 1984 and Yugoslavia edged the USA out for the gold medal in the men’s water polo competition held at the Pepperdine University pool. West Germany took the bronze.

The new location for Super Care Pharmacy, in the city-owned building at Webb Way, was originally a Union Federal Bank when it opened in the ‘70s. The Chamber of Commerce held its meetings in the community room there.

It’s time. The old Malibu Lumber sign should come down.

It’s only been about four months that the Las Flores traffic light has been mistimed-causing dozens of cars an unnecessarily long wait on PCH, backing up traffic at peak hours, while nothing happens for an extra 15 seconds at the intersection during every single red light.

By the looks of the constant overflow parking at the bottom of Corral Canyon, it seems that Solstice Canyon is no longer Malibu’s best-kept secret.

Fifty-eight percent of the land within the City of Malibu borders is undeveloped, according to the General Plan. Only about 370 dwelling units have been added to Malibu since 1990, about a 6 percent increase in 20 years.

By far, more homes in Malibu watch the sun rise over the water than watch the sun set over the water.

Low on funds, but want a great vacation? How about the hiking, tourist attractions and beaches of Malibu? Five fabulous days of beauty, recreation and discovery at virtually no cost: Day 1: Paradise Cove and the Headlands Park. Day 2: Serra Retreat, the trails in Malibu Canyon and a tour of the Pepperdine campus. Day 3: Bluffs Park, including the trails, then Malibu Creek State Park and Tapia Park. Day 4: Hike and picnic in Solstice (if you can find a place to park). Then sunset at the Malibu Lagoon, pier and Surfrider Beach. Day 5: Charmlee Park and finish with the breathtaking beaches along Encinal Bluffs.

Think of how fabulous Malibu will be in 2012, as I have predicted earlier. The new library will be completed, as well as the two new Carbon Beach restaurants. The Cross Creek Plaza will have had its facelift. The new shopping center at Trancas may be finished, as well. Malibu will then complete a new era that already has seen new life at Legacy Park; a revitalized Lagoon Park; new Malibu Pier; new Las Flores and Trancas community parks; new Cross Creek street; new movie theater; refurbished plaza at Point Dume; and The Lumber Yard.

Remember when I mentioned last time how lucky I was to not get a PCH speeding ticket in my 35 years in Malibu? Never mind.

How did Pepperdine acquire the land it sits on now, 40 years after it began construction? The land was given to the institution, then a small college in South Central L.A., which moved from the ghetto to the beach. The Adamson family, then seven decades into Malibu ownership, donated the land in 1967. What was 138 acres originally contributed is now 830 acres of total campus space.

Let the history books show that the number of sit-down restaurants open each night in 90265, with the addition of Habana and Savory, excluding the faster food/pickup variety, in the summer of 2010 numbers 34.

Biggest change in the real estate industry in the past six months? An offer on a property can be typed up online, immediately emailed to a client far away, downloaded, signed, scanned and emailed back, then forwarded to the listing agent, within minutes. The offer is in! (If only there were more offers).

There is just one place in our mountains where the elevation tops 3,000 feet. It is at Sandstone Peak, at the top of Yerba Buena, just inside Ventura County. Castro Peak at the top of Latigo and Saddle Peak at the top of Rambla Pacifico are just under that benchmark.

Can we please get our own school district?

And sun all day long?
