I am delighted and frankly relieved to read the many letters on behalf of Nancy and Harry at our local Ralphs. They are two fine people. I understand Ralphs’ “no tolerance” policy and for the most part think it a good plan-for Ralphs. This does not take into account any extenuating circumstances and we all know there are always at least some of them. In this case it seems the Pepperdine students had been to the store on previous occasions and had shown “valid” ID during those visits and had, during those visits to the store, purchased liquor. Assuming their ID to be valid would it not then be fairly rude of the cashiers to ask for ID every time the customers presented themselves? The customer would feel put out in short order-they are not being recognized.
But you see, that is just it. Nancy and Harry DID recognize their customers and welcomed them to the store every time. It is time Pepperdine did something. They need to set a precedent at the school of ‘no tolerance.’ In other words, and if that were the case, Harry and Nancy would be the heroes not the victims.
The relief in all this is that the citizenry of Malibu is aware enough of itself to even know this is going on and to come forth with a stance. It shows a great sense of community and makes me prideful of living here.
Nancy and Harry live here, or nearby, and it is not fair that two such dedicated and long-term employees should be at the mercy of a few students (probably from very good homes) who are more than likely not even aware of what might be at stake for our local employees.
I think the citizens who have responded to this unwelcome occurrence are to be commended and thanked by the rest of us for stepping forward and expressing what many of us also wish to express. Therefore, we would be most appreciative of Ralphs if they would fairly evaluate this dilemma and seriously, seriously reconsider rehiring Nancy and Harry at the Malibu store.
