[12:30 p.m., Dec. 6]: The southbound lane of Malibu Canyon Road, between Mulholland Highway and the tunnel, is closed due to rockslides, per an alert from the City of Malibu.

[12:14 p.m., Dec. 6]: Pacific Coast Highway has been reopened to traffic, per Caltrans.

The right eastbound lane near Leo Carrillo State Beach is closed to aid mud cleanup.

[11:10 a.m., Dec. 6]: Here are the current road closures in Malibu due to today’s rain event, per a City of Malibu alert:

  • Pacific Coast Highway, from Trancas Canyon Road to Las Posas Road, is closed in both directions.
  • Encinal Canyon Road and Decker Canyon Road (Mulholland Highway to PCH) are fully closed in both directions.
  • Cuthbert Road is closed until further notice.
  • Rainsford Place and Bonsall Drive areas are closed

According to the alert, “private streets in the Malibu West area are currently clear.”

“There’s been no homes impacted that I’ve heard about, haven’t heard [about] any injuries. People should just remain cautious [any time it rains]—that’s going to be our new reality for a long time,” City Manager Reva Feldman said in a phone call with The Malibu Times.

“We’ve been running crews all night,” she said, referring to the city, LA County Public Works and LA County Fire. “We have heavy equipment staged in areas where we expect problems and that includes areas that were not burned [but where slides are common] like the Bonsall/Rainsford area.”

The city confirmed Malibu’s Disaster Recovery Center is currently closed.

“What we’ve been telling all residents is, people should stay in the ‘Ready! Set! Go!’ position and assess their own situation. If they feel unsafe, they can relocate to a safer position. No evacuations are currently in place,” she said.

[10:28 a.m., Dec. 6]: The local Disaster Recovery Center—located at the old County Malibu Courthouse—is closed today, Dec. 6, due to the weather.

[10:14 a.m., Dec. 6]: Cuthbert Road is also closed until further notice, per an alert from the City of Malibu.

The city suggests Busch Drive or Philip Drive as alternate routes. Note: Pacific Coast Highway is closed heading westbound at Busch Drive, per SigAlert.

[10:03 a.m., Dec. 6]: Caltrans confirms Pacific Coast Highway is closed from Decker Road to Las Posas Road “until further notice.”

Additionally, Decker Road is closed from Mulholland Highway to PCH.

[8:48 a.m., Dec. 6]: Encinal Canyon Road, from the 101 (Venture Freeway) to PCH, is also closed, per an alert from the City of Malibu.

Kanan Dume Road has been fully reopened following a closure earlier this hour.

The city is activating its emergency operations center at City Hall. “Flooding and mud expected on all roads through the morning,” the alert stated.

[8:31 a.m., Dec. 6]: Pacific Coast Highway is now closed in both directions, from Busch Drive to County Line, and Kanan Dume Road is closed in both directions, from the 101 (Ventura) Freeway to PCH, according to an alert from the City of Malibu.

Motorists should exercise caution while traveling in the burn areas—the city advises people to be “exceptionally cautious and watch for mud, debris, and rocks in roadways.”

[8:23 a.m., Dec. 6]: Several mudslides have been reported near Leo Carrillo and El Matador state beaches, Kanan Dume Road and in the 30400 block of Morning View Drive, according to the City of Malibu.

The mudslide near Leo Carrillo-El Matador has closed Pacific Coast Highway in both directions; estimated time of reopening is unknown.
