I can accept the fact that one-half of this country’s voters think very differently than me. However, when I read headlines like this-“Bush Sees Mandate, Drafts Ambitious Plans. Aides expect president to pursue even more ambitious and conservative goals than those sought in his first term,” it is clear that the man the other-half elected has no interest in uniting the populous, but instead is (again) choosing to use his slim ‘victory’ to push forward an agenda that alienates me and at least 48% of everyone else.
With more Republicans taking over Democratic seats in the federal legislature, it will be even easier for the Bush regime to continue to undo years of progressive legislation. As I see it, our country is painfully torn between the fearful (trying to hang on to an obsolete notion of unlimited natural resources, a divinely guided union, and a country so powerful that it set policy for the rest of the world) and the brave (believers in the future, peace, science, renewable resources, opportunities for all).
Why should we one-half of Americans have to sit on the sidelines and watch four years of potential ‘evolution’ be instead squandered on old world “slash and burn, divide and conquer” policies?
I encourage everyone to take all measures to counter this crude, cynical current, including communications with elected officials, and personal actions that protest “taxation without representation.”
