As Malibu parents prepared to meet Wednesday evening to discuss hiring an independent expert to examine potential contaminants at Malibu High School, school district superintendent Sandra Lyon released a statement asking for cooperation.

The parents are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. at the Point Dume Clubhouse to hear from Dr. Paul Rosenfeld of the Santa Monica firm Soil / Water / Air Protection Enterprise (SWAPE), and potentially hire him for a $5,000 fee.

Lyon said in the statement that the district had been encouraging parents to bring their concerns directly to a community task force formed by the district.

“I understand that parents are meeting to discuss hiring their own expert,” Lyon said, “and we have been asking them to bring their concerns and questions to the task force so that we may work collaboratively to gather facts.

“Ultimately, I hope that they will agree that sharing a goal and focusing all resources, including human energy, will help us yield more efficiently the information and answers that we seek.”

The District purposefully created a task force to include community concerns and questions which will help guide data collection, determine which experts must be retained to assist with this project and oversee the process that, ultimately, will answer questions about the health of this school environment. We seek the facts and the truth, and we are committed to take the necessary action to include key stakeholders throughout the data collection and analysis process. I understand that parents are meeting to discuss hiring their own expert, and we have been asking them to bring their concerns and questions to the task force so that we may work collaboratively to gather the facts. Ultimately, I hope they will agree that sharing a goal and focusing all resources, including human energy, will help us yield more efficiently the information and answers that we seek.

The District task force will be meeting on Thursday. A meeting summary will be posted to the District’s website.
