Good morning Malibu!

——

Light rain fell over Malibu overnight … just barely enough to wet the ground.

That does nor change the forecast for the rest of the day.

A major stream of moisture  … an atmospheric river … is steaming across the Pacific from greater Hawaii.

It is on a collision course with a low pressure system and cold air moving down from the Gulf of Alaska.

Predicted impact … Malibu .… at midmorning.

Rainfall rates right now …. a quarter-inch per hour this morning at Point Conception.

Satellite passes offshore indicate a half inch per hour rainfall rates occurring offshore.

These rates should intensify by at least a factor of two … to one inch per hour or more.

Orographic lift will come into play … the clouds bump into the mountains … clouds go up …… rain comes down.

At least 5 inches of rain will fall in Malibu … the National Weather Srvice says.

The peak wind forecast has backed down …

The forecast remains … five to 10 inches of rain and 50 mile an hour winds in locations with mountains to the north.

Those stations have the bags but no sand.

All sand and sandbags are available while supplies last.

Swastikas and handwritten threats saying … quote … “you’re going to burn.”

Those notes were left at a jewish center 15 miles north of Malibu … on Kanan Raod norht of the 1-0-1 Freeway …

in the Oak Park neighborhood.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has created a task force to investigate.

Several anti-Semitic notes were left on random homes and a Jewish Chabad center over the weekend.

Cases of Norovirus … or some other type of stomach bug … continue to pop up at public schools in Santa Monica.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District says it is using “an abundance of caution.”

The district has discontinued “optional group activities” at all schools …. to help prevent the spread of the stomach virus.

Optional activities include dances, field trips, camp trips and music rehearsals.

A letter sent to parents on Tuesday says this highly contagious illness does linger on a bit and the district is working hard at our school sites to minimize exposure on campus.

It’s unclear if the virus has spread to Malibu schools.

Cases of the illness have been detected during the field trip to Yosemite at John Adams Middle School.

Other cases have cropped up at two weeks at other campuses including Santa Monica High School, District officials have said.

Here’s a fun weekend project.

The National Park Service wants to teach you how to take apart coyote poop.

Technically … it’s called dissecting coyote scat.

National Park Service researchers want to understand the diet of local coyotes.

A similar study a decade ago found that coyotes ate rabbits, pocket gophers, woodrats, and mice.

Native and fallen backyard fruit, too.

And in very rare cases, a pet cat.

But what are coyotes eating today?

That’s where you come in.

Wildlife ecologists hope to learn that with the help of the public and are looking for area residents to volunteer with the Coyote Scat Team at local monthly scat dissection events.

The first event for local area residents will be a dissection training, held on Saturday March 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Thousand Oaks.

Subsequent dissection events will be held on the first Saturday of each month.

More information … at the National Park Service website.
