Compassion for animals

I am writing to draw attention to an article written by Henry Chu which appeared on the front page of the L.A. Times last week, Aug. 8. Sadly we are apprised daily of the bloodshed and suffering in the Middle East and our hearts go out to all those caught up in this horrific situation and we feel frustrated and hopeless of any imminent solutions.

However, this time the account of suffering was not about humans but about animals. In particular, about donkeys and about one woman’s campaign to save them. In the Holy Land there is little or no concern for the welfare of these animals; donkeys are considered “the lowest of the low.” They are replaceable. The cost to care for one that is sick or injured far outweighs the price one pays for a new one. Consequently they are dumped like trash and usually they starve and/or die a painful death from their injuries. Besides the careless neglect they suffer, many of these animals are tormented and mutilated for fun.

Three years ago, having witnessed these abuses first hand, Lucy Fens gave up her job as a flight attendant for British Airways and moved to Israel. Outside of Tel Aviv, she established “Safe Haven for Donkeys,” a sanctuary for the abused and injured animals. Some might question efforts focused on helping animals in a place where human suffering is staggering. But, compassion and kindness in any form can only bring awareness to a place so instilled with hatred and her story is an inspiration of how one person can make a difference against overwhelming odds. Her efforts are also centered on educating both Israeli and Arab children to respect these animals. This in turn can only result in respect for one another.

The situation in the Middle East seems beyond hope but perhaps salvation can come through the children. What better place to start than to teach them love and respect for all life, be it animal or human.

One person can make a difference. Maybe we should all try to do something, too. The sanctuary at www.safehaven4donkeys.org is a registered charity with a very meager budget. Please consider doing something to help.
