One of the greatest benefits of living in Malibu is our strong sense of community. Time after time, the people of Malibu have pulled together in times of crisis. Whether dealing with wildfires, earthquakes, road closures or any other difficulties thrown at us, our community has always risen to the occasion. Now our community is facing yet another crisis: state cuts in funding for our community’s public schools.
This crisis is one that affects all of us in our community, whether or not we are parents of public school children. Our state budget deficit threatens to undermine many of the qualities that have made our local schools so excellent. Good schools make good communities. Our local schools are not only our investment in our neighborhood children, but also a factor in the overall high quality of life in our community. All of us in Malibu benefit whether directly or indirectly by the excellent reputation of our neighborhood schools.
The efforts of our community a decade ago led to the creation of Malibu High School, which has had a tremendous positive impact on our community. Now we must insure that the state’s budget crisis will not be allowed to undermine what we have worked so hard to achieve. A thriving neighborhood and a primary and secondary educational system committed to excellence. Your “Yes” vote on Measure S will reinstate many of the jobs and programs that will be eliminated by state budget cuts. For example, the many talented teachers whose jobs have been cut (including ten at Malibu High alone) will be reinstated if Measure S passes.
Your “Yes” vote on Measure S is needed by your community. Every vote is critical, as a two-thirds majority is required for Measure S to pass. If you are not already registered to vote, please do so. Let’s come together once again as a community and pass Measure S on June 3rd.
