Pepperdine University honored James R. Wilburn, dean of the School of Public Policy, for his 40-year career at the school at a gala event in Beverly Hills Oct. 27.
Wilburn started his career at Pepperdine in 1971 as a professor of history. He soon transitioned into the administration, first as provost and then as the vice president for university affairs. In 1982 he was named the business school’s new dean, and later took the position of dean of the School of Public Policy.
Wilburn received a PhD in economic history from the University of California, Los Angeles, a master’s degree in history from Midwestern State University and a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University. He also received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biblical Studies from Abilene Christian University.
The tribute dinner featured speakers and Pepperdine alumni Jon Kemp (class of 1994, MBA 2007) and Frank W. Cornell (MBA 1978, Ed.D 2004). The event also featured a message from Pepperdine University President Andrew K. Benton and a tribute presentation by Edwin J. Fuelner, Jr., the founding chair of the School of Public Policy Board of Visitors and the president of the Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation. More than 420 guests attended the tribute dinner.
