After months of behind-the-scenes work, a local education nonprofit has made big strides to revamp its presence in Malibu.
Advocates for Malibu Public Schools (AMPS), a longtime proponent of the formation of an independent Malibu school district, just opened a new office in central Malibu, launched a new website and hired a full-time staffer to coordinate community outreach efforts.
“This is a very significant move for AMPS, to allow us to outreach to the community and build momentum for our goals of creating a Malibu Unified School District, and an excellent education for all students,” said AMPS President Craig Foster.
Alexia Burton was brought on to work out of the new office located in the same building as Malibu’s Chamber of Commerce on Stuart Ranch Road, just south of City Hall.
“Alexia will focus on community outreach and education in both of the communities of Santa Monica and Malibu as well as supporting the efforts of the AMPS Board of Directors,” according to a statement from AMPS.
The group is also anticipating results from a second feasibility study that should provide further information on future obstacles Malibu faces if it undertakes the separation process. AMPS is seeking separation from Santa Monica as soon as 2015.
Additionally, AMPS plans on having a booth at this year’s Malibu Chili Cook-Off over Labor Day Weekend.
