Malibu Pony Baseball coach Phil Johnson speaks to the group of seventh- and eighth-grade boys before tryouts Saturday.

Malibu Pony Baseball tryouts were held Saturday afternoon at Bluffs Park. Although tryouts were open to both boys and girls between the ages of 12-14, only boys came out to play ball. Games begin in late February. Head coach Phil Johnson said there would be three coaches overall, with Johnson heading up the older players.

“Having grown up playing baseball in Malibu, I had one goal when I stopped playing and started coaching: help make Malibu the hot bed of baseball in Southern California,” Johnson said. “This is just another step toward putting Malibu baseball on the map as the best around.” Practice begins this Sunday.
