From play performances to basketball classes, there’s plenty to do this weekend in Malibu.

Friday night brings SurfAid International’s “Behind the Palms” fundraising event to Malibu. The event will feature performances by Donavon Frankenreiter and DJ Mario Cotto, a screening of “Behind the Palms: 10 Years of SurfAid,” a silent auction, raffles, food and drinks. The benefit takes place at Malibu Market & Design, 25001 PCH, at 6 p.m. More information can be obtained by calling 760.753.1103.

Friday is also opening night for the Malibu Stage Repertory Theater’s newest play, Arthur Miller’s “The Ride Down Mt. Morgan.” The story follows a New York man with two families who is forced to confront both at once after a near-fatal car crash. The performance takes place at the Malibu Stage Company, 29243 PCH, at 8 p.m. and continues until Oct. 16. More information can be obtained by calling 310.589.1998.

This Sunday, Patriot Day is observed in honor of those who lost their lives during the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Pepperdine University is conducting a remembrance ceremony, where the names of the victims of the tragedy will be read, at the university, 24255 PCH, at 11 a.m. More information can be obtained by calling 310.506.4000.

Another Sept. 11 memorial is taking place at Malibu Presbyterian Church, which is holding special services at 9:30 a.m. and 11:11 a.m. on Sunday. The services will honor the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff Department and Malibu Fire Stations 70 and 88 for their service to the Malibu community as first responders. The City of Malibu is hosting a basketball clinic Sunday, where L.A. Sparks forward Candace Parker will teach participants about the game and how to improve their skills.
