Marvin Braude, a former Westside Los Angeles City Councilman, died Dec. 7 of pneumonia at age 85. Braude was hospitalized at Eisenhower Medical Center over Thanksgiving weekend after breaking his leg in a fall and contracted pneumonia while in the hospital.

Braude served on the council from 1965 until 1997 and was best known for his dedication to preserving the Santa Monica Mountains. Braude was concerned with environmental issues such as protecting the coastline and reducing air pollution.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said in a press release, “[Braude] was a great leader of integrity and uncompromising principle. Marvin was truly one of a kind, a politician consistently ahead of his time, embracing issues before they became popular and educating the rest of us in the wisdom of his position.”

Braude is survived by his daughters, Ann and Liza and grandchildren, Emma Braude Adler and Benjamin Braude Adler.
