May 23 guest column on the Malibu Lagoon Restoration Project

This article mixes a few facts in with many fictions and some irrelevancies, and panders to peoples fears about ‘big government’’ and bank failures. Birds won’t die any more than they do right now: in the 1983 configuration, they flew away and returned when the work was done. The main lagoon will not be affected except by silt: fish including gobies are nearly all in the main lagoon and the deep pool by the highway bridge. 95% of birds use the main lagoon, not the side channels. This article is alarmist nonsense and baloney. The writer is probably well-meaning, but is ill-informed. I lead a monthly birdwatching trip at the lagoon, and have been censusing the birds there since the late ‘70s. These activities will continue and we will see what, if any, effect there is on the birds.

Thank you Pamela!…I agree how preposterous it is to cut $22 million in closing 70 State Parks as well as [off-highway vehicle] sites. Yet, they can justify spending $10 million on a project that admits if it doesn’t clean the lagoon, they will go in every 5 years (which really means more funding to keep on keeping on with the bulldozers).
